Recently, someone on a social media platform questioned why I mentioned that I don’t shoot revolvers. I explained the reason, which you may already know. If not, read the text below:
Then he replied: “Where I live, there are no criminals,” implying that he didn’t need to worry about security.
Most people, including police officers, private security, and military personnel, will carry their weapons throughout their lives and never need to use them.
Most people will wear their seatbelts throughout their lives and never be involved in a serious accident.
Most people have never had to use a fire extinguisher in their lives.
However, if any of these events occurs, the absence of a firearm, seatbelt, or fire extinguisher will facilitate exponentially more serious consequences.
The key is preparation. Just like car insurance, most of the time, it’s entirely useless, but when you need it, you’re glad to have it.
We prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. We love having that tool when we need it. The source of light in the dark. Food when hungry. We love being able to locate ourselves when no one else can, and we take pleasure, even internally, in thinking: no one in this room could defeat me in a fight.
We take pleasure in breaking records in physical exercises, staying alert to technological innovations, and having food and water in our bunker for the next six months.
I have to agree with my colleague: perhaps he doesn’t need to worry about security today. But he also needs to agree with me: perhaps he will need to.
